Never Underestimate the Recuperative Power of a Root Beer Float: How a Root Beer Float on a Hot Day Illuminates Entrepreneur Mental Health

In July 2023, I spent a week bicycling across Iowa. I wasn’t alone. I was one of the thousands of riders taking part in RAGBRAI — the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. This week-long bicycle journey across Iowa is more than just a cycling event. It’s a vibrant community on wheels, a celebration of fitness, friendship, and discovery in America’s heartland, drawing thousands from all corners of the globe.

This wasn’t my first time participating in RAGBRAI; it was, in fact, my third. Each ride has been a unique experience, offering new challenges, perspectives and insights. This time, as I navigated Iowa’s rolling hills and expansive plains, the journey resonated with me more deeply, revealing lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the crucial importance of perspective. The ride became more than just a physical feat; it transformed into a metaphorical journey through the world of entrepreneurship. Every mile, every hill, and every flat stretch provided a moment to reflect on the broader aspects of running a business and the mindset required to navigate its uncertain terrain.

In this series, I share with you five key insights gleaned from this remarkable journey. Each one is framed by a specific event during the ride, reflecting on how these moments resonate deeply with the entrepreneurial spirit. These stories, born from the rolling landscapes of Iowa and the camaraderie of RAGBRAI, offer a unique lens through which to view the challenges and triumphs of the entrepreneurial journey. Whether you’re a seasoned business leader or a budding entrepreneur, you’ll find valuable lessons in resilience, strategic thinking, and the importance of balance, all gleaned from an unforgettable 530-mile cycling adventure. So join me on this reflective journey as we delve into these entrepreneurial insights.

Never Underestimate the Recuperative Power of a Root Beer Float

On a particularly hot day during RAGBRAI, I decided to tackle the Karras Loop, an optional extra that stretches the day’s journey to 100 miles. After this arduous additional thirty miles, I met up with my friend at a rest area in a small town. What caught our eye was not any refreshment, but an inviting ice cream stand we had noticed before. This time, we indulged and ordered root beer floats served in large styrofoam cups filled with freshly made vanilla ice cream topped with cold root beer. Sitting in the shade, enjoying our floats, the moment was not just a pause but a delightful escape from the day’s heat and fatigue. As we relaxed and enjoyed our treat, I turned to my friend and remarked, “You should never underestimate the recuperative power of a root beer float.”

As I sat there under the shade, the cool, creamy root beer float in hand, the immediate relief it provided was palpable. It wasn’t just the physical respite from the heat; it was a mental pause, a momentary departure from the rigors of the ride that allowed me to reflect. Savoring each sip, I began to draw parallels between this simple pleasure and the often overlooked aspects of entrepreneurial life. I realized how such moments of unwinding are not mere breaks, but essential practices in maintaining one’s mental health. In the realm of entrepreneurship, where success often takes precedence over personal well-being, acknowledging the importance of these breaks can be life-changing. They are not just pauses; they are opportunities to rejuvenate, to reassess, and to realign with our goals with renewed vigor and clearer vision. This moment underscored a crucial lesson: just as a cyclist needs to refuel and rest, so too does an entrepreneur need to nurture their mental health to sustain creativity and resilience in their business journey.

The Importance of Mental Health for Entrepreneurs

In the high-stakes world of entrepreneurship, mental health often takes a backseat to financial outcomes and business growth. Yet, neglecting mental wellness can undermine the very success entrepreneurs strive to achieve. The pressures of starting and running a business can lead to significant stress, anxiety, and even burnout. As more entrepreneurs recognize the link between their mental health and their professional performance, the focus on practices that safeguard mental wellness has become paramount. Embracing strategies such as taking regular breaks, rewarding oneself, and maintaining balance is not just advisable; it’s essential for long-term success and personal resilience. By prioritizing mental health, business leaders not only enhance their productivity but also foster a healthier work environment, setting a positive example for everyone within their sphere of influence.

The Importance of Taking Breaks

This simple pleasure during our rigorous ride underscored the critical lesson that taking breaks is not merely beneficial, but essential. For entrepreneurs who often face long hours and unrelenting pressures, breaks are vital to disconnect, clear the mind, and reduce stress. Just like a root beer float on a hot day, taking a break can refresh your mind and body, boosting creativity and focus when you get back to work.

Rewarding Yourself

Treating ourselves to root beer floats was a small act of reward that brought disproportionate joy and satisfaction. For entrepreneurs, small rewards can serve as powerful motivators and reminders of accomplishments. Whether it’s celebrating a milestone with a special purchase or taking an afternoon off to enjoy an activity you enjoy (cycling?), these rewards raise your spirits and contribute to overall well-being.

Finding Balance and Moderation

The day of the ride was not just about enduring another segment but also about enjoying the journey. This balance between pushing limits and taking moments to relish achievements is crucial for sustained success. Entrepreneurs need to strive for this balance in their professional lives. It’s essential to moderate the drive for success with the need for personal fulfillment and well-being. Just as cyclists need to manage their energy and pace, business leaders must balance their ambition with health and happiness.

Reflecting on the day’s experience and the brief but significant pause for root beer floats, it’s clear that maintaining mental health isn’t just about managing stress—it’s about cultivating a lifestyle where breaks, rewards, and balance are part of the routine. This approach ensures that entrepreneurs don’t just survive their challenges but thrive amidst them, with enough energy and passion preserved for both their business and personal lives.
