In July 2023, I spent a week bicycling across Iowa. I wasn’t alone. I was one of the thousands of riders taking part in RAGBRAI — the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. This week-long bicycle journey across Iowa is more than just a cycling event. It’s a vibrant community on wheels, a celebration of fitness, friendship, and discovery in America’s heartland, drawing thousands from all corners of the globe.

This wasn’t my first time participating in RAGBRAI; it was, in fact, my third. Each ride has been a unique experience, offering new challenges, perspectives and insights. This time, as I navigated Iowa’s rolling hills and expansive plains, the journey resonated with me more deeply, revealing lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the crucial importance of perspective. On a particularly hot day during RAGBRAI, I decided to tackle the Karras Loop, an optional extra that stretches the day’s journey to 100 miles. After this arduous additional thirty miles, I met up with my friend at a rest area in a small town. What caught our eye was not any refreshment, but an inviting ice cream stand we had noticed before. This time, we indulged and ordered root beer floats served in large styrofoam cups filled with freshly made vanilla ice cream topped with cold root beer. Sitting in the shade, enjoying our floats, the moment was not just a pause but a delightful escape from the day’s heat and fatigue. As we relaxed and enjoyed our treat, I turned to my friend and remarked, “You should never underestimate the recuperative power of a root beer float.”
